Safety is more than a priority at OG&E – it’s a value and a belief that defines our culture. Guided by our safety principles, we have a commitment to maintain a safe workplace for our employees and a safe environment for our customers. We encourage everyone to keep safety at the forefront at work, at home, at the wheel and at play.
Electricity is a vital part of our daily lives, but it can be dangerous – even deadly. Whether you're at work or just doing a few chores at home, follow these guidelines to avoid potentially hazardous situations:
Adults:
· Place extension cords away from heat sources and bulbs. Never use them under rugs or through windows where they might be pinched and become worn.
· Do not have any electrical wiring, fixtures or receptacles within 20 feet of a single-family residential pool.
· When working on a ladder or scaffold, avoid injuries by making sure tools are secure and don’t fall.
· If a person or object is in contact with a power line, don’t touch the person, object or line. The electric current could flow through you. Call 911 and OG&E immediately.
For more information to help you and your family live safely, please see our Electrical Safety Brochure.
Children:
· Keep appliance and extension cords out of reach. Replace old or frayed cords with new ones.
· Teach kids the correct way to unplug electric cords: pull the plug, not the cord.
· Check trees in your yard for proximity to power lines. Children should not climb trees that are underneath or touching power lines.
· Never let kids tamper with or play on electrical boxes, power poles, and electrical line structures or around substations.
See our kids safety flyer for more tips on how to play it safe and sound when electricity is around.

OG&E’s e-SMARTkids program offers free online access to educational games and activities about electricity and how to use it safely. Did you know trained OG&E experts also visit schools across Oklahoma and western Arkansas to give electrical safety presentations to students?

The Oklahoma City Thunder and OG&E have teamed up to celebrate Oklahoma emergency personnel. The OG&E Safety Partner Award honors first responders who exemplify our values of teamwork, integrity, public service, individual safety and well-being while protecting and serving their community. Each month’s OG&E Safety Partner will be recognized at a Thunder game. OKC Thunder entertainers and OG&E will also visit the Safety Partner’s organization to celebrate and recognize the recipient and to present a financial donation to the recipient’s organization from OG&E.
