Families recently enjoyed a day of fishing at Horseshoe Lake in Harrah at a free clinic hosted by Oklahoma Gas and Electric Company (OG&E), the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation (ODWC), and the Oklahoma Wildlife Conservation Foundation (OWCF). The organizations joined together to teach families about our state’s biodiversity by inviting children and parents to fish on OG&E’s Horseshoe Lake Power Plant property.
Families, volunteers, and ODWC officials gathered at Horseshoe Lake on Saturday, May 6, for the free fishing clinic. Volunteers taught attendees about the critical roles aquatic ecosystems play in our environment and how important it is to protect the ecosystems around us. Afterward, families spent the rest of the day fishing in the lake and enjoying the beautiful Oklahoma outdoors. Children took home complimentary poles and bobbers while receiving fishing lessons complete with expert tips and tricks.
“At OG&E, we are committed to growing the communities we serve, and part of that is our commitment to support and preserve the ecosystems in those communities,” said Jamie Moore, community outreach coordinator at OG&E. “Our partnership with the ODWC and OWCF to hold educational fishing clinics helps us engage with our communities about the importance of aquatic ecosystems and sustainable ways to enjoy our local water ways.”
The partnership supports the wildlife department’s Aquatic Resources Education Program, an initiative focused on educating Oklahoma families and youth about our state’s aquatic environments and natural beauty.
“When we provide children with opportunities to learn about and enjoy Oklahoma’s wildlife and outdoors, we equip them with the knowledge and skills necessary to become responsible advocates for our region,” said Skylar St. Yves, the Aquatic Education and Fishing Coordinator at the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation. "It’s really important work, and we’re proud to partner with organizations like OG&E who prioritize sustainable, environmental recreation and education.”
With a mission to protect fish, wildlife, and their habitats, the ODWC works to grow the community of hunters and anglers in the state. The OWCF encourages residents to conserve and celebrate the state’s unique wild spaces and strong outdoor traditions. Both organizations partner with individuals and companies like OG&E that value conservation and foster stewardship with those who care for the land.
OG&E is committed to protecting the environment in the communities it serves. Through partnerships with trusted organizations like the ODWC and its foundation, and events like the fishing clinics, the energy company educates the communities it serves about the importance of promoting biodiversity through habitat conservation.
