In celebration of World Water Day, Oklahoma Gas & Electric (OG&E) teamed up with its longtime partner RIVERSPORT OKC on Tuesday, March 25 to collect trash and clean up the Oklahoma River as it prepares for upcoming world-class competition series.
More than 30 volunteers from the local electric company, along with employees from its community partners Accenture, Vicinity, Vegetation, CLEAResult, and Tango Public Relations, as well as commercial customers like Niagara Bottling and Nestle Purina, spent the afternoon at the downtown Boathouse District picking up trash along the waterway, and making the community a cleaner, greener place for residents to live and play. Over 600 pounds of debris was gathered during the event.
“It’s great to work with RIVERSPORT OKC to highlight the important role water plays in our community and the efforts OG&E takes to preserve this natural resource now and, in the future,” said Charles Walworth, OG&E Chief Financial Advisor, who also serves on the RIVERSPORT Foundation Board of Directors. “World Water Day is a wonderful opportunity celebrate our dedication to the environment while helping RIVERSPORT prepare for a world-class event.”
The 2025 ICF Spring World Ranking Series, an international Canoe Slalom and Kayak Cross competition, will be held at RIVERSPORT OKC from March 28-30. The volunteer event will help ensure the area is clean and ready for this world-class event featuring top athletes from ten different countries.
“We are grateful for our partners at OG&E for their efforts in serving, protecting, and benefiting our local waterways,” said Chris Sorensen, executive director of RIVERSPORT OKC. “We especially want to thank the volunteers who came out today to make sure both our local community and our guests from around the world see the Boathouse District at its best.”
This year, OG&E is also collaborated with its Vegetation team and other local partners to provide a woodchipper, allowing the repurposing of wood debris pulled from the river into wood chips for use around the Boathouse District, thereby reducing landfill waste.
